The College of Palliative Medicine of Sri Lanka successfully conducted the E.M.W. Jayasuriya Oration 2026 on 26th March 2026 at the Sri Lanka Medical Association Auditorium. The event brought together medical professionals, academics, and members of the healthcare community for an evening dedicated to advancing knowledge and discussion in the field of palliative medicine and urological care.
The oration was delivered by Dr Hilary M Fernando, Consultant Urological Surgeon at the District General Hospital, Gampaha. His oration, titled “Palliation in Urology: Beyond the Spotlight of Cure,” highlighted the importance of compassionate, patient-centred care in the management of chronic and advanced urological conditions. The presentation emphasized the need to look beyond curative treatment alone and to address the physical, psychological, and social wellbeing of patients through holistic palliative approaches.
The session provided valuable insights into the evolving role of palliative care within urology and encouraged meaningful reflection among attendees on the importance of dignity, comfort, and quality of life in clinical practice. The audience greatly appreciated the depth of knowledge, clinical experience, and practical perspectives shared during the oration.
The event also served as an opportunity for professional interaction and academic exchange among healthcare professionals from diverse specialties. The successful conduct of the oration reflected the continued commitment of the College of Palliative Medicine of Sri Lanka towards promoting education, awareness, and excellence in palliative care practice within the country.
